CHAPTER 21

Tara was lying on the bed reading when the door swung open and Joe and Dog came in, huffing crystals of frozen air before them.

Overjoyed, she ran across the room and threw her arms around the old man.

“Oh, Joe, Thank goodness you’re back. I was so lonely without you.”

“Whoa. I’m covered with snow, you’ll freeze.” He gave her a quick hug and pushed her gently away. “You’re not crying, are you?”

“No, of course not. It’s just that three days is a long time. It felt like a week.” Tara gave her eyes a quick swipe and bent down to hug the dog. His tail was waving frantically as he waited to be greeted.

Joe shook his boots off and started unwrapping the layers of scarves that enveloped his face. Ice clung to his white beard.

“Now that’s a greeting, hey Dog?”

Tara ran to the stove and dipped water into the coffee pot. “How was your trip? Did you get lots of furs? Where did you sleep? Are you hungry?”

Joe laughed and seated himself in the rocking chair. The dog turned around three times on his bed and dropped with a sigh.

The old man watched Tara as she pulled a paper bag of potatoes towards her. “My trip was fine. Dog and I walked many miles and saw lots of snow.” He shook his head “Not many animals around though. That must be why those wolves were hanging around. It’s too cold and all the rabbits and mice are hiding out.”

Tara looked up from her task “So no furs?”

“A few.” He leaned back. “Just not as many as I expected since I haven’t been out for a while. But, never mind that, how did you manage?”

“I was fine.” She poured water over the potatoes and placed them on the stove. “You need a clock. And a radio. It was way too quiet.”

He laughed, “I like quiet. There’s a radio around here somewhere. I just never felt the need. I’ll find it for you before I go out again.”

Tara was putting a deer steak into the frying pan. She stopped what she was doing and turned her blue eyes towards him. “You’re going again?”

“Of course. Those traps have to be checked every week for sure.” He reached over and started to his feet. “I must say, it’s much nicer to come home to dinner and a smile than a cold, dark cabin.”

He looked at the woodpile. “Did you go outside at all?”

“I emptied the bucket and filled the tub with snow a few times.”

“I’ll carry some more wood tomorrow and make bread.” He reached for the coffee pot. “Looks like this is ready. And that venison smells good.”

They chatted as they enjoyed their meal. Joe told her about the lean-to he had built in the woods. Tara mentioned the dream that she had woken from.

“It was so real.” She laid down her fork. “My mom was calling me.” Tears welled up. “She’s looking for me. I thought they would just go to my grandparent’s farm and forget me.
